The team at Inhibit Coatings has won the Trans-Tasman Innovation & Growth Award at the Australia New Zealand Leadership Forum 2022 (ANZLF). The award was presented during Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern’s Ministerial delegation to the forum in Sydney.
The ANZLF theme of “Great Acceleration: Emerging Stronger Together” reflects the dynamic start-up from Victoria University of Wellington’s track record of bringing high value science out of academia. Professor Jim Johnston (founder) and his prior students Dr Eldon Tate (CEO & founder) and Dr Emma Wrigglesworth (technical lead) have been supported for many years by the New Zealand Product Accelerator.
The forum brought over 250 business leaders and elected officials from across the Tasman together, including members of the NZ delegation Ministers Grant Robertson, Damien O’Connor, Stuart Nash, Willie Jackson, Michael Wood, Ayesha Verrall and James Shaw, and their Australian counterparts.

Inhibit Coatings produces highly effective antimicrobial surface coatings with activity that lasts the lifetime of the coating. These coatings work to inhibit the growth of microbial contamination and outbreaks in facilities with high hygiene and sanitisation requirements such as food and beverage, healthcare, and transport. Inhibit Coatings works with end-users and suppliers to develop antimicrobial coatings for a range of applications including flooring, walls, textiles, and filters.
The company continues to develop their next-generation antimicrobial systems and is open to industry partnerships to incorporate the coatings into advanced medical devices, manufacturing equipment and other areas where avoiding microbial contamination is a priority.
The ANZLF hosts business-led sector groups focused on driving change across five key areas; Innovation, Tourism, Health Technology, Infrastructure, and Indigenous Business, while working closely with the Australian and New Zealand governments to influence the Single Economic Market Agenda.
